Sewage (waste water) contains large amounts of organic matter, and its treatment relies heavily on the natural metabolic activity of microorganisms.
- Primary treatment physically removes large debris and settles out solid particles as sludge, but does not involve significant microbial action.
- Secondary (biological) treatment: the effluent from primary treatment is passed into large aeration tanks and continuously agitated/aerated, allowing naturally occurring aerobic microbes (forming flocs, or 'activated sludge') to grow and consume the dissolved and suspended organic matter, significantly reducing the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of the effluent. A portion of this activated sludge is passed into anaerobic sludge digesters, where anaerobic bacteria decompose the remaining organic matter (bacteria and fungi) to produce a mixture of gases, chiefly methane, H₂S, and CO₂, collectively called biogas, which can be used as a fuel. …
