The pollen wall's tough, sporopollenin-coated outer layer is the exine; the soft cellulose-pectin inner layer is the intine.

Structure of the pollen grain wall

A mature pollen grain has a well-defined two-layered wall:

  1. Exine — the hard outer layer, composed of sporopollenin, an extremely resistant biopolymer that can withstand high temperatures, strong acids and alkalis, and enzymatic degradation. This is why pollen exine is well preserved as fossils. The exine has prominent apertures called germ pores, where sporopollenin is absent, through which the pollen tube emerges during germination. The exine also bears characteristic ornamentations used to identify pollen (the study of pollen is palynology).
  2. Intine — the thin, soft inner wall layer, made of cellulose and pectin, continuous and unbroken (except at germ pores).
