Einstein's photoelectric equation, eV0=hν−ϕ0eV_0 = h\nu - \phi_0, is a straight line of slope h/eh/e when V0V_0 is plotted against ν\nu; its ν\nu-intercept is the threshold frequency ν0=ϕ0/h\nu_0 = \phi_0/h. Whichever line crosses the ν\nu-axis further to the right has the larger ϕ0\phi_0.

Setting up the relation

Einstein's photoelectric equation can be written as

eV0=hν−ϕ0  ⟹  V0=he ν−ϕ0eeV_0 = h\nu - \phi_0 \implies V_0 = \frac{h}{e}\,\nu - \frac{\phi_0}{e}

This is a straight line in the V0V_0–ν\nu graph with:

  • slope =h/e= h/e (a universal constant — same for every material, which is why both lines A and B are parallel/have the same slope),
  • ν\nu-intercept (where V0=0V_0 = 0) at ν=ν0=ϕ0/h\nu =\nu_0 = \phi_0/h, the threshold frequency.
