Molecules of the atmosphere scatter sunlight, and Rayleigh's law says the scattered intensity varies as 1/λ41/\lambda^4 -- so blue light (shortest visible wavelength) is scattered many times more strongly than red, and this scattered blue light reaches our eyes from every part of the sky.

Rayleigh's scattering law

Sunlight (containing all visible wavelengths) is scattered by air molecules (much smaller than the wavelength of light) as it passes through the atmosphere. The intensity of light scattered by such small particles follows Rayleigh's law:

I∝1λ4I \propto \frac{1}{\lambda^4}

Comparing red (≈700 nm\approx700\,\text{nm}) and blue (≈450 nm\approx450\,\text{nm}):

IblueIred=(700450)4≈5.8\frac{I_{blue}}{I_{red}} = \left(\frac{700}{450}\right)^4 \approx 5.8

so blue light is scattered nearly six times more strongly than red.
