Balance paid to creditors = Total amount owed − value of asset taken over by them = Rs. 60,000 − Rs. 45,000 = Rs. 15,000.

On dissolution of a firm, when a creditor takes over an asset instead of being paid entirely in cash, the asset is recorded at the AGREED (settlement) value — not its book value — because that is what the creditor is actually treated as having 'received' towards clearing the debt. Here:

  • Amount owed to creditors = Rs. 60,000
  • Furniture's book value = Rs. 50,000 (irrelevant to the cash computation — it only matters for the Realisation Account entries)
  • Agreed value at which creditors accepted the furniture = Rs. 45,000

Since the creditors have effectively been 'paid' Rs. 45,000 of their Rs. 60,000 claim through the furniture, the firm must pay the shortfall in cash:

Rs. 60,000 − Rs. 45,000 = Rs. 15,000.
