Communication is the two-way exchange of understanding; semantic, organisational, psychological and personal barriers all hinder its effectiveness.

Communication is the process by which a sender transmits information, ideas or feelings to a receiver, using a common set of symbols (words, figures or gestures), aiming to create shared understanding between the two.

Barriers to effective communication fall into a few broad categories:

  1. Semantic barriers — these arise from problems in the encoding and decoding of the message into words and symbols: badly expressed messages, symbols/words with multiple meanings, faulty translations, or unclarified assumptions can all cause the receiver to understand something different from what the sender intended.

  2. Organisational barriers — factors related to the organisation's own structure and rules, such as long chains of command causing delay and loss of information at each level, a very rigid/complex organisation structure, or ambiguous rules that leave people unsure what information to share with whom.

  3. Psychological (or emotional) barriers — the mental and emotional state of either party affects communication: premature evaluation (judging the message before it is fully received), lack of attention, poor retention, distrust, or strong emotions can all distort the message or its reception.
