Marketing, from a management viewpoint, is a bundle of functions that together identify and satisfy customer needs profitably.

Six functions of marketing from the management point of view:

  1. Gathering and analysing market information — researching customer needs, preferences, competitors and market trends so that management can make informed marketing decisions.
  2. Marketing planning — deciding in advance what products to offer, at what price, through which channels, and with what promotion, so all marketing activities work towards a common objective.
  3. Product designing and development — deciding the features, quality, design and variety of the product so that it matches what customers actually want.
  4. Standardisation and grading — standardisation sets uniform specifications for a product, and grading sorts products into different classes based on quality, both of which reduce disputes and help customers choose with confidence.
  5. Packaging and labelling — designing attractive, protective packaging and informative labels that identify the product and communicate essential information (ingredients, usage, price, manufacturing/expiry date) to the customer. …
