Causative organism: Ascaris lumbricoides, a large roundworm (helminth/nematode parasite) that lives in the small intestine of infected humans.
Mode of infection: The infection spreads through the faecal–oral route — eggs of the parasite, passed out in the faeces of an infected person, contaminate soil, water, and vegetables/fruits grown in or washed with such water. A healthy person becomes infected by ingesting food or water contaminated with these eggs, or by eating unwashed vegetables/fruits or through contaminated hands.
