Stiff, inflamed joints in old age are a symptom of arthritis, most often osteoarthritis caused by age-related cartilage degeneration.

The condition described, stiffness and inflammation of joints, common in old age, is called arthritis, a general term for inflammation of one or more joints.

Possible reasons/causes:

  1. Age-related wear and tear (osteoarthritis): with advancing age, the smooth articular (hyaline) cartilage covering the bone ends at a joint gradually degenerates/wears down, leading to bone-on-bone friction, pain, stiffness and reduced mobility, the most common cause of joint problems in the elderly.
  2. Reduced synovial fluid: ageing joints often produce less lubricating synovial fluid, increasing friction and stiffness during movement.
  3. Autoimmune reaction (rheumatoid arthritis): in some individuals, the immune system attacks the synovial membrane of joints, causing chronic inflammation, swelling and eventual joint damage. …
