Marasmus is a protein-deficiency disorder of infancy, marked by severe body wasting.

Proteins are essential macromolecules built from amino acids and are required for growth, tissue repair, enzyme and hormone synthesis, and general body maintenance. A chronic, severe dietary deficiency of protein (typically along with insufficient total calories) in the diet of infants, especially those under one year of age who are weaned early or inadequately fed, leads to marasmus — characterised by severe wasting of muscle and subcutaneous fat, stunted growth, a shrunken, wizened appearance, and weakness.
