Proteins perform diverse roles in living systems — structural support, catalysis (enzymes), transport, hormonal signalling, and immune defence (antibodies) — while, in the alternative, interphase (G1, S, G2) is the preparatory, non-dividing phase of the cell cycle in which the cell grows and replicates its DNA.

Option (a): Five functions of proteins

  1. Structural: Proteins like collagen and keratin provide structural support to connective tissue, skin, hair, and nails.
  2. Enzymatic (catalytic): Most enzymes, which catalyse virtually all biochemical reactions in the body, are proteins.
  3. Transport: Proteins such as haemoglobin transport oxygen in blood, while various membrane carrier/channel proteins transport substances across cell membranes.
  4. Hormonal: Some hormones are proteins/peptides, e.g., insulin, which regulates blood glucose levels.
  5. Defence: Antibodies (immunoglobulins), which are proteins, help defend the body against pathogens.

(Proteins also serve contractile functions, e.g., actin and myosin in muscle contraction, and storage functions, e.g., albumin.)

Option (b): Phases of interphase of the cell cycle

Interphase is the non-dividing, preparatory phase between two successive mitotic/meiotic divisions and consists of three sub-phases:

  1. G1 (Gap 1) phase: The cell is metabolically active, grows continuously, and synthesises RNA and proteins needed for DNA replication, but DNA is not yet replicated. …
