Arterial blood pressure (normally ~120/80 mmHg) is the force blood exerts on artery walls, and it is kept in balance by cardiac output, vessel resistance/blood volume, and neural plus hormonal feedback control.

Arterial blood pressure (BP) is the pressure that circulating blood exerts against the walls of the arteries. It has two components:

  • Systolic pressure (~120 mmHg) — the higher pressure recorded when the ventricles contract and eject blood into the arteries.
  • Diastolic pressure (~80 mmHg) — the lower pressure recorded when the ventricles relax between beats. Normal arterial BP is thus expressed as approximately 120/80 mmHg.

Factors that regulate blood pressure:

  1. Cardiac output — the volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute; higher cardiac output raises BP.
  2. Peripheral resistance — determined mainly by the diameter of arterioles; vasoconstriction increases resistance and BP, vasodilation lowers it.
  3. Blood volume — increased blood volume (e.g., from fluid retention) raises BP.
  4. Blood viscosity — more viscous blood offers more resistance to flow, raising BP.
  5. Elasticity of vessel walls — loss of arterial elasticity (as in atherosclerosis) raises BP. …
