Each of the three pairs of cockroach legs is a jointed appendage made of six main parts: coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia, tarsus and the claw-bearing pretarsus.

Each walking leg of the cockroach is attached to one of the three thoracic segments and consists of the following jointed segments, from the body outward:

  1. Coxa, the basal-most segment, articulating with the thoracic segment.
  2. Trochanter, a small segment immediately following the coxa.
  3. Femur, the longest and stoutest segment of the leg.
  4. Tibia, a long, slender segment usually bearing rows of spines.
  5. Tarsus, made up of five small segments called tarsomeres.
  6. Pretarsus, at the very tip, bearing a pair of curved claws (ungues) for gripping rough surfaces, with a soft adhesive pad, the arolium, between the claws for clinging to smooth/vertical surfaces.

A neat diagram should show these six labelled parts in sequence, with the paired claws and arolium clearly marked at the tip.
