Hybridization = mixing atomic orbitals into new equivalent hybrid orbitals. SF6: S is sp3d2, octahedral shape, 90° angles.

Hybridization is the process of intermixing atomic orbitals of slightly different energies on the same atom to produce an equal number of new, equivalent orbitals (hybrid orbitals) of identical energy and shape, oriented in specific directions suited for bond formation.

SF6 structure and hybridization: The central sulfur atom (ground state 3s23p43s^23p^4) is promoted so that all 6 valence electrons are unpaired (using empty 3d orbitals), and then one 3s3s, three 3p3p, and two 3d3d orbitals mix to form six equivalent sp3d2sp^3d^2 hybrid orbitals. These six hybrid orbitals point towards the six corners of a regular octahedron, each overlapping end-on with a half-filled 2p2p orbital of a fluorine atom to form a σ S–F bond.
