'Mole' measures the amount of substance itself; 'molarity' measures how concentrated that substance is once dissolved in a solution of a given volume.

0.50 mole of NaOH is simply an amount of substance: 0.50×40 g/mol=200.50 \times 40\ \text{g/mol} = 20 g of NaOH, and this amount does not depend on whether or how it is dissolved in any solvent — it is the same 20 g whether it is solid or dissolved in 1 L or 10 L of water.
