Question of 50

Q.Two wires of the same materials have lengths in the ratio 1:2 and their radii are in the ratio 1:21:\sqrt{2}. If they are stretch by applying equal forces, then find the ratio of elongations of the two wires. OR A spherical ball contracts in volume by 0.084% when subjected to hydraulic pressure of 50 atmosphere. Calculate the bulk modulus of the material of the ball. Given 1 atmosphere = 1.01×1051.01\times10^5 Pa.

Working out ΔL∝L/A\Delta L \propto L/A for the two wires gives an elongation ratio of exactly 1:11:1.

For a wire under a stretching force FF, elongation is ΔL=FLAY\Delta L = \dfrac{FL}{AY}, where LL is the length, A=πr2A=\pi r^2 the cross-sectional area and YY Young's modulus (same for both wires, same material). Since the same force FF is applied to both wires,

ΔL1ΔL2=L1/A1L2/A2=L1L2⋅A2A1\dfrac{\Delta L_1}{\Delta L_2} = \dfrac{L_1/A_1}{L_2/A_2} = \dfrac{L_1}{L_2}\cdot\dfrac{A_2}{A_1}
