The nature of the path (straight line, circle, parabola, etc.) is decided jointly by the direction of the velocity and the direction of the acceleration, not by either alone.

If a particle has zero acceleration, it moves in a straight line along its velocity. If the acceleration is directed along (or opposite to) the velocity, the particle still moves in a straight line, only its speed changes.
