The first law of thermodynamics is energy conservation applied to heat, work, and internal energy: dQ=dU+dWdQ = dU + dW.

The first law of thermodynamics states that when a certain amount of heat dQdQ is supplied to a thermodynamic system, it is used partly to increase the internal energy dUdU of the system and partly to do external work dWdW by the system on its surroundings:

dQ=dU+dWdQ = dU + dW

Here:

  • dQdQ = heat added to the system (positive if absorbed, negative if released),
  • dUdU = change in internal energy of the system,
  • dW=P dVdW = P\,dV = work done by the system (positive if the system expands). …
