A refrigerator is a reversed heat engine that pumps heat from cold to hot using work input; its performance is measured by β=Q2/W=T2/(T1−T2)\beta = Q_2/W = T_2/(T_1-T_2) for the ideal case.

A refrigerator is a device that works in a cycle to continuously transfer heat from a cold body (the interior of the refrigerator) to a hot body (the surroundings/room outside), which is the reverse of the natural direction of heat flow. Since this is not spontaneous, external work must be done on the working substance (refrigerant) to achieve it — this is exactly a heat engine run in reverse.

Working: The refrigerant absorbs heat Q2Q_2 from the cold reservoir (interior) at temperature T2T_2 while evaporating; a compressor does work WW on it, raising its pressure and temperature; it then releases heat Q1=Q2+WQ_1 = Q_2 + W to the hot reservoir (surroundings) at temperature T1T_1 while condensing; finally it expands through a throttle valve back to low pressure/temperature, and the cycle repeats.
