To judge the financial position/solvency of the firm — both short-term (liquidity, i.e., the ability to meet current liabilities as they fall due, assessed through current/quick ratios) and long-term (solvency, i.e., the ability to meet long-term obligations like debentures and loans, assessed through debt-equity and related ratios).
