Consumer protection is the set of measures — chiefly legal — taken to protect consumers from exploitation and to guarantee their rights.

In any market, there is an information and power imbalance between the seller (who knows the product and controls supply) and the buyer (who often cannot verify quality, safety or fair pricing). Consumer protection exists to correct this imbalance by:

  • Protecting consumers against unfair trade practices such as adulteration, defective or unsafe goods, short weighing, false or misleading advertisements and overcharging.
  • Providing a cheap, quick and simple redressal mechanism (consumer courts/commissions) for grievances.
