Life expectancy measures expected years of life (higher is better); infant mortality rate measures infant deaths per 1,000 live births (lower is better) — both are key human-capital/health indicators.

Life expectancy at birth is an estimate of how many years, on average, a child born today can expect to live, calculated from the age-specific death rates prevailing at that time. A rising life expectancy signals improving nutrition, sanitation, and access to healthcare, and is one of the three components (along with education and income) of the Human Development Index. Infant mortality rate (IMR), by contrast, measures the number of children who die before reaching one year of age, out of every 1,000 live births in a given year.
