A business cycle moves through expansion, peak, contraction and trough, before a fresh expansion begins — a recurring but irregular pattern seen across market economies.

A business cycle describes the wave-like fluctuation of economic activity — output, employment, and income — around its long-run growth trend. In the Expansion phase, output, employment and incomes rise, investment and consumer confidence are high. This rise continues until it reaches a Peak, the highest point of activity before the cycle turns down. The economy then enters a Contraction (recession) phase, where output, employment and incomes fall and business confidence weakens.
