Privatisation improves efficiency, eases the fiscal burden and widens consumer choice — but can neglect welfare goals, create private monopolies, and cost jobs.

Merits:

  1. Improved efficiency: Private ownership, driven by the profit motive and free from bureaucratic/political interference, typically manages enterprises more efficiently than public-sector undertakings burdened by overstaffing and slow decision-making.
  2. Reduced fiscal burden: Disinvestment/sale of loss-making or non-strategic PSUs earns the government revenue and relieves it of the continuing burden of financing their losses, freeing up budget resources for other priorities.
  3. Better quality and consumer choice: Private competition forces firms to respond better to consumer preferences, improve product/service quality and widen choice, something monopoly public enterprises often had little incentive to do.

Demerits:
