India's foreign trade has moved toward manufactured/service exports and has diversified across trading partners, especially after 1991.

Changing composition of trade: At Independence, India's exports were dominated by traditional, primary-sector items like tea, jute and cotton textiles, with imports consisting largely of manufactured consumer goods and food grains. Since the economic reforms of 1991 and subsequent globalisation, the composition has shifted markedly — exports now include a far larger share of engineering goods, chemicals, gems and jewellery, and especially software and IT/business-process services, which have become a major strength of India's external sector; imports have increasingly included capital goods, petroleum and electronics needed to fuel industrial growth.
