SCP is microbial biomass grown as a protein-rich food/feed source, valued for its rapid, resource-efficient production.

Single Cell Protein (SCP) refers to the dried cells (or the protein extracted from them) of micro-organisms such as algae (e.g., Spirulina), bacteria (e.g., Methylophilus methylotrophus) and fungi/yeast, cultured on a large industrial scale, often using inexpensive substrates like whey, molasses, agricultural or industrial wastes. Because microbes have extremely rapid growth rates and can be grown on such waste substrates, SCP offers an efficient way to produce large quantities of high-quality protein without requiring the large land and time inputs of conventional livestock/crop farming.
