Gause's Principle says competing species for the same resource cannot coexist forever; classic examples are goats displacing the Abingdon tortoise, and grey squirrels displacing red squirrels.

Gause's 'Competitive Exclusion Principle': Proposed by the Russian ecologist G.F. Gause, this principle states that two species competing for the exact same limiting resource(s) in the same habitat cannot coexist indefinitely — over time, the species that is even marginally more efficient at exploiting the resource (the competitively superior species) will eventually eliminate or exclude the other species from that habitat, or force the competitively inferior species to shift its niche (resource use) to avoid direct competition (niche differentiation).

Two examples of competition in nature:

  1. On the Galapagos Islands, the introduction of goats led to intense competition with the native Abingdon tortoise for the same food plants; being more efficient feeders, the goats drove the tortoise population to near extinction. …
