Example: In humans, the gene responsible for phenylketonuria (PKU) — a condition where the enzyme that converts phenylalanine to tyrosine is defective — has pleiotropic effects, causing intellectual disability as well as reduced hair and skin pigmentation, because the accumulated phenylalanine interferes with multiple metabolic pathways.
