Acid-catalyzed dehydration of an alcohol is a classic E1 mechanism: protonate the leaving group (making it water, a much better leaving group), ionize to a carbocation, then eliminate a beta-H.

Step 1 — protonation: the alcohol's oxygen is protonated by concentrated H₂SO₄, converting the poor leaving group –OH into the much better leaving group –OH₂⁺: CH₃CH₂OH + H⁺ → CH₃CH₂OH₂⁺.

Step 2 — loss of water (ionization, rate-determining): the protonated alcohol loses a water molecule to form a carbocation: CH₃CH₂OH₂⁺ → CH₃CH₂⁺ + H₂O.
