Wolff–Kishner fully removes a carbonyl oxygen via hydrazone formation and base-promoted loss of N2; carboxylic acids hydrogen-bond in pairs (dimers), doubling the intermolecular attraction that must be overcome to boil.

(i) Wolff–Kishner reduction: an aldehyde or ketone is first converted to its hydrazone by reaction with hydrazine (NH₂NH₂): R₂C=O + H₂N–NH₂ → R₂C=N–NH₂ + H₂O. Heating this hydrazone with a strong base (KOH or NaOH) in a high-boiling solvent (ethylene glycol) then eliminates N₂ gas, fully reducing the carbonyl carbon to a CH₂ group: R₂C=N–NH₂ --(KOH, Δ)--> R₂CH₂ + N₂↑.
