KMnO4_4's oxidising half-reaction (and hence Mn's product oxidation state) depends on the medium: Mn2+^{2+} in acid (5-electron change), MnO2_2 in neutral/faintly alkaline (3-electron change), and MnO42−_4^{2-} in strongly alkaline (1-electron change).

In acidic medium: permanganate is reduced fully, Mn going from +7 to +2 (colourless):

MnO4−+8H++5e−→Mn2++4H2OMnO_4^- + 8H^+ + 5e^- \rightarrow Mn^{2+} + 4H_2O

Example: 2KMnO4+3H2SO4+5SO2→K2SO4+2MnSO4+2H2SO4 (i.e. oxidises SO2 to SO42−)2KMnO_4 + 3H_2SO_4 + 5SO_2 \rightarrow K_2SO_4 + 2MnSO_4 + 2H_2SO_4\ (\text{i.e. oxidises SO}_2\text{ to SO}_4^{2-}).

In neutral or faintly alkaline medium: Mn goes from +7 to +4, precipitating as brown MnO2_2:

MnO4−+2H2O+3e−→MnO2↓+4OH−MnO_4^- + 2H_2O + 3e^- \rightarrow MnO_2\downarrow + 4OH^-

This is used, e.g., to oxidise iodide to iodate, or thiosulphate to sulphate.
