Bacillus thuringiensis is a soil bacterium whose crystal (Cry) proteins are insecticidal, and its cry genes are used to create insect-resistant transgenic crops such as Bt cotton.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a Gram-positive soil bacterium that, during sporulation, forms crystalline protein inclusions containing the toxin protein Cry. This protein exists as an inactive protoxin; when an insect larva ingests it, the alkaline pH of the insect gut solubilises and activates the toxin, which binds to the gut epithelium, creates pores, causes swelling and lysis of the cells, and kills the insect.
