Energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional - Sun -> producers -> herbivores -> carnivores -> decomposers - and follows the 10% law, with about 90% of energy lost as heat at each trophic transfer.

The ultimate source of energy for almost every ecosystem is the Sun. Its flow is a one-way (unidirectional) process, unlike the cyclic flow of nutrients.

  1. Producers (first trophic level, T1): Green plants (and other autotrophs) capture only about 1-5% of the incident solar energy (PAR) and convert it into chemical energy (food) by photosynthesis - this is the Gross Primary Productivity; after respiratory loss the remainder is Net Primary Productivity available to consumers.

  2. Primary consumers (herbivores, T2): Herbivores such as grasshoppers, deer or cattle eat the producers and obtain energy stored in plant food.

  3. Secondary and tertiary consumers (carnivores, T3, T4): Herbivores are eaten by primary carnivores (e.g. frog, small birds), which in turn are eaten by top carnivores (e.g. snake, hawk).

  4. Decomposers: Bacteria and fungi break down dead producers and consumers at all levels, releasing nutrients back to the environment.
