Oogenesis is the formation of the ovum from oogonia, beginning before birth but completed (meiosis II) only after fertilization.

Oogenesis is the process by which a mature haploid ovum (female gamete) is formed in the ovary. It begins during the embryonic development stage itself: a large number of cells called oogonia (2n) are formed within the fetal ovary by mitotic divisions. These oogonia start meiotic division (prophase I) but get temporarily arrested at that stage, and are now called primary oocytes. Each primary oocyte then gets surrounded by a layer of granulosa cells, forming a primary follicle. Many of these primary follicles degenerate, and only a limited number survive till puberty.
