The menstrual cycle is a hormonally regulated ~28-day cycle of ovarian and uterine changes that prepares the body for a possible pregnancy each month.

The menstrual cycle is the repetitive cyclic change occurring in the reproductive organs of a sexually mature human female, occurring on average every 28-29 days. It first starts at puberty (called menarche) and continues till about the age of 50, after which it stops (menopause). It has four main phases:

  1. Menstrual phase (about days 1-5): The endometrial (uterine) lining, which had thickened in the previous cycle, breaks down and is shed along with blood as the menstrual flow, since fertilization did not occur.
  2. Follicular/proliferative phase (about days 5-13): Under the influence of FSH (and LH) from the pituitary, a few ovarian follicles begin to grow, one of which matures into a Graafian follicle. The growing follicle secretes oestrogen, which stimulates repair and proliferation of the endometrium.
  3. Ovulatory phase (around day 14): A sudden surge of LH (LH surge), along with FSH, induces the rupture of the Graafian follicle and release of the secondary oocyte from the ovary - this event is called ovulation. …
