The human female reproductive system comprises a pair of ovaries, oviducts, a uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia, and mammary glands, together responsible for producing ova, enabling fertilization, and supporting pregnancy.

The female reproductive system is located in the pelvic region and consists of the following main parts:

Ovaries: A pair of primary female reproductive organs, almond-shaped and about 2-4 cm long, located one on each side of the lower abdomen. Each ovary is attached to the pelvic wall and to the uterus by ligaments. The ovaries perform two functions: they produce the female gametes (ova), through the process of oogenesis, and they secrete the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

Fallopian tubes (oviducts): A pair of tubes, each about 10-12 cm long, extending from the region of the ovary to the uterus. Each oviduct has three parts - the funnel-shaped infundibulum, closest to the ovary, with finger-like projections called fimbriae that help collect the ovum after ovulation; the wider ampulla, which is typically the site of fertilization; and the narrower isthmus, which joins the uterus. The oviducts open into the uterus via the isthmus and transport the ovum (and later the developing embryo) toward the uterus through ciliary movement.

Uterus: Also called the womb, it is a single, inverted pear-shaped, hollow, muscular organ located between the urinary bladder and the rectum, supported by ligaments attached to the pelvic wall. The wall of the uterus has three layers: the outer perimetrium, the middle thick muscular myometrium (responsible for contractions during childbirth), and the inner glandular endometrium (which undergoes cyclical changes during the menstrual cycle and is the site of implantation of the embryo).

Cervix: The lower, narrow part of the uterus that connects it to the vagina; the cavity of the cervix is called the cervical canal, which, along with the vagina, forms the birth canal.

Vagina: A muscular, highly elastic tube that extends from the cervix to the exterior, serving as the female copulatory organ, the passage for menstrual flow, and the birth canal during parturition.
