The inguinal canal is the passage in the abdominal wall through which the testis descends into the scrotum, so it connects the scrotal sac with the abdominal cavity.

In the human male the testes originate inside the abdominal cavity during embryonic life and later descend into the scrotum for a temperature about 2–2.5 °C below body temperature, which is required for normal sperm production. During this descent each testis passes through the inguinal canal, an oblique passage in the anterior abdominal wall.
