Diazotrophs are nitrogen-fixing prokaryotes that convert atmospheric N2 into a usable form, enriching soil fertility as biofertilizers.

Diazotrophs are bacteria and cyanobacteria that possess the enzyme nitrogenase and can carry out biological nitrogen fixation, i.e. reduce inert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonia which plants can absorb. They are of three main kinds:

  • Free-living soil bacteria - Azotobacter (aerobic) and Clostridium (anaerobic).
  • Symbiotic bacteria - Rhizobium in the root nodules of leguminous plants, and Frankia in some non-legumes.
  • Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) - Anabaena, Nostoc and Oscillatoria, which fix nitrogen and enrich water and soil (e.g. Anabaena in the fern Azolla in paddy fields). …
