Anemophily is wind-mediated pollination, characterised by flowers adapted to release and capture large amounts of light, airborne pollen without relying on animal pollinators.

Anemophily is the mode of abiotic pollination in which pollen grains are carried from the anther to the stigma by wind currents rather than by an animal vector or water. Wind-pollinated flowers show several characteristic adaptations for this mode of transfer:

  • Pollen grains are produced in enormous numbers (since wind dispersal is inefficient and much pollen is lost), and are typically light, dry, and non-sticky so they can remain airborne easily.
  • Flowers are usually small, inconspicuous, and often lack bright colour, strong scent, or nectar, since there is no need to attract a pollinator.
  • Anthers are often well exposed, sometimes on long, dangling filaments (e.g. hanging catkins), to release pollen freely into moving air.
  • Stigmas are often large, feathery, or brush-like, providing a bigger surface area to trap airborne pollen grains efficiently. …
