Acid-catalysed dehydration of ethanol at 443 K gives ethene.

Ethanol can be converted to ethene by intramolecular dehydration. Heating ethanol with excess concentrated sulphuric acid (which acts as a dehydrating agent) at about 443 K (170 C) removes a molecule of water:

CH3-CH2-OH --(conc. H2SO4, 443 K)--> CH2=CH2 + H2O
