This reaction 'degrades' an amide by removing the carbonyl carbon (as carbonate), converting -CONH2 directly into -NH2 attached to the remaining carbon skeleton — a useful way to step DOWN by one carbon while introducing an amine group.

When an amide is treated with bromine in the presence of aqueous or alcoholic sodium hydroxide, the amide is converted to a primary amine having one carbon atom less than the original amide. This is called the Hofmann bromamide degradation (or Hofmann's amide degradation) reaction.
