Vitamins are essential organic micronutrients whose deficiency produces specific disorders:

(i) Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is needed for red blood cell formation (erythropoiesis). Its deficiency causes pernicious anaemia, in which red blood cells fail to mature properly. Vitamin B12 is water-soluble and, being synthesised only by micro-organisms, is mainly obtained from animal-derived food.
