Proteins are among the most functionally versatile biomolecules. Two of their important functions are:
-
Enzymatic/catalytic function: Many proteins act as enzymes - highly specific biological catalysts that accelerate the biochemical reactions of metabolism (e.g. digestion, respiration, DNA replication) under mild body conditions, without themselves being consumed.
-
Structural function: Fibrous proteins provide mechanical strength and structure to tissues - for example, keratin is the chief structural protein of hair, nails, and skin, while collagen is the most abundant protein in connective tissue, skin, bones, and tendons, giving them tensile strength.
