Disaccharides are carbohydrates that hydrolyse to give exactly two monosaccharide units, linked by a glycosidic bond; sucrose and maltose are two examples.

A disaccharide is a carbohydrate (sugar) that, upon hydrolysis in the presence of dilute acid or a specific enzyme, breaks down to yield TWO molecules of monosaccharides — either the same or different — joined to each other through a glycosidic linkage (an oxygen bridge formed between the anomeric carbon of one sugar unit and a hydroxyl group of the other).

Examples:
