Order (experimental, can be fractional) differs from molecularity (theoretical, always a whole number for an elementary step); solving the given first-order kinetics problem, 75% completion takes about 62.1 minutes.

(a) Order of reaction: the sum of the powers (exponents) of the concentration terms of the reactants in the experimentally determined rate law. It can be zero, a whole number, or even fractional, and must be found by experiment - it need not match the stoichiometric coefficients.

Molecularity: the number of reacting species (atoms, ions, or molecules) that must collide simultaneously in a single elementary reaction step to bring about a chemical reaction. It is always a whole number (1, 2, or rarely 3), is a theoretical concept, and applies only to a single elementary step (not to a complex, multi-step overall reaction).

Derivation of the first-order rate constant:

For a first-order reaction A -> products, the rate law is:

-d[A]/dt = k[A]

Separating variables and integrating between [A] = [A]0 at t = 0 and [A] = [A] at time t:

integral of d[A]/[A] = - integral of k dt

ln[A] - ln[A]0 = -kt

ln([A]0 / [A]) = kt

k = (1/t) ln([A]0/[A]) = (2.303/t) log([A]0/[A])
