Not every collision between reactant molecules leads to product; only those with enough energy to cross an energy barrier (the activation energy, Ea) succeed — this barrier separates reactants from the high-energy 'activated complex' / transition state.

According to collision theory, reactant molecules must collide with proper orientation and with sufficient energy to react. Most molecules in a sample possess only the average kinetic energy, which is usually not enough to break existing bonds and form new ones. Only a fraction of molecules, in the high-energy tail of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, have enough energy to overcome the energy barrier.

Activation energy (Ea) is defined as the minimum amount of extra energy (over and above the average energy of the reactants) that the reacting molecules must possess for a collision to be effective, i.e. to lead to product formation, by passing over the potential-energy barrier via the transition state (activated complex).
