SO2 is prepared by treating sodium sulphite with dilute sulphuric acid; it reduces acidified KMnO4 and oxidises H2S to sulphur, and its bleaching action (via reduction) is temporary/reversible, unlike Cl2's oxidative bleaching.

  1. Laboratory preparation of SO2: Sulphur dioxide is prepared by heating sodium sulphite with dilute sulphuric acid: Na2SO3 + H2SO4 (dilute) -> Na2SO4 + H2O + SO2 (gas evolved) (Alternatively, by heating copper turnings with concentrated H2SO4: Cu + 2H2SO4(conc.) -> CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O)
    1. Reaction with acidified KMnO4: SO2 acts as a reducing agent and decolourises the purple/pink colour of acidified potassium permanganate: 5 SO2 + 2 KMnO4 + 2 H2O -> K2SO4 + 2 MnSO4 + 2 H2SO4
    2. Reaction with H2S: here SO2 itself is reduced (acts as an oxidising agent, an unusual role for it), and elemental sulphur is precipitated: SO2 + 2 H2S -> 3 S (down arrow, precipitate) + 2 H2O
  2. Bleaching action of SO2: …
