Alloys are made by melting two or more metals (or a metal with carbon/another non-metal) together and letting them solidify as a homogeneous blend, giving properties (hardness, corrosion resistance, lower melting point) different from and often superior to the pure constituent metals.

An alloy is prepared by melting the constituent metals together in a desired proportion and then cooling the melt to give a homogeneous solid mixture. Transition metals readily form alloys with each other because their atomic sizes are quite similar, allowing atoms of one metal to substitute for atoms of the other in the crystal lattice without much distortion.
