R=R−1R=R^{-1} is exactly the condition for a relation to be symmetric.

By definition, R−1={(b,a):(a,b)∈R}R^{-1} = \{(b,a) : (a,b)\in R\}.

A relation RR is called symmetric if (a,b)∈R  ⟹  (b,a)∈R(a,b)\in R \implies (b,a)\in R for all a,ba,b, i.e. R⊆R−1R \subseteq R^{-1} and R−1⊆RR^{-1}\subseteq R, i.e. R=R−1R = R^{-1}.
