Rutherford's α-particle scattering experiment showed that an atom has a small, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by mostly empty space, leading to the nuclear model of the atom.

Experiment: A beam of fast, energetic α-particles (from a radioactive source) was directed at a very thin gold foil (about 100 nm thick). A circular fluorescent screen (ZnS) surrounding the foil detected the scattered α-particles by the scintillations (flashes of light) they produced, allowing the number of particles scattered at each angle to be counted.

Observations:

  1. Most of the α-particles (nearly 98%) passed straight through the foil with little or no deflection.
  2. A small fraction of particles were deflected through moderate angles.
  3. A very small number (about 1 in 8000) were deflected through angles greater than 90°, and a few even bounced almost straight back (deflection close to 180°). …
